Hire Terms and Conditions
These are the terms for hiring my Garrett ACE 300i metal detector. They're written in plain English and are intended to be fair to both of us. By collecting the detector you agree to them.
1. The Hire
The hire fee is £50 per day. A day means 24 hours from the time you collect the detector, unless we agree a different arrangement. Payment is due in full on collection, in cash or by bank transfer. Longer hires can be arranged in advance and are charged at £50 per day.
2. Collection and Return
The detector must be collected from and returned to BN1 5GJ in Brighton at times we agree beforehand. I'm not able to deliver it. Please bring photo ID (a driving licence or passport) when you collect, along with your current address. If you return the detector late without letting me know, each started extra day is charged at the daily rate of £50. If you're running a bit behind, please just contact me, as I'd rather know than charge you.
3. What's Included
The hire includes the Garrett ACE 300i with a fresh set of AA batteries, and a quick demonstration of how to use it at collection if you'd like one. Please also have a read of my guide to using the detector before you set out.
4. Batteries
I supply the detector with fresh batteries, which comfortably last longer than a day's detecting. If the batteries nonetheless run flat during your hire, you can either replace them yourself with four AA batteries (keep the receipt and I'll reimburse you), or let me know and I'll refund you for the time you lost, worked out as a fair proportion of the daily rate.
5. Faults
The detector is checked and working when you collect it. If it develops a genuine fault during your hire through no mishandling, please stop using it and contact me straight away. I'll refund you for the unused portion of the hire, or if I can, swap it or fix the problem so you can carry on. Please don't attempt repairs or open the control box yourself.
6. Your Responsibility for the Equipment
You're responsible for the detector from collection until return. Please note that the control box (the unit with the screen) is not waterproof. Damage caused by submerging it, leaving it out in rain, or other mishandling, and loss or theft of the detector, will be charged at the cost of repair or like-for-like replacement, up to a maximum of £250. Normal wear and tear, and a sandy or muddy coil, are expected and fine. The detector may not be lent or re-hired to anyone else.
7. Cancellations
You can cancel or rearrange free of charge any time before collection. I may occasionally need to cancel too, for example if a previous hirer returns the detector damaged, in which case I'll let you know as soon as possible and refund anything you've paid in full.
8. Using the Detector Lawfully
You're responsible for detecting lawfully. That means getting the landowner's permission before detecting on private land or in parks, not detecting on protected sites such as scheduled monuments, filling in any holes you dig, and reporting qualifying finds under the Treasure Act 1996. Anything you find that doesn't belong to you may need to be handed to the police as lost property. Any fines or claims arising from where or how you chose to detect are your responsibility.
9. No Guarantee of Success
I really hope you find what you've lost, and the detector gives you a good chance, but I can't guarantee you'll find your item, and the hire fee isn't refundable on the basis that you didn't.
10. Liability
You use the detector at your own risk, and I'm not liable for any injury, loss or damage arising from your use of it, except where the law says I can't exclude liability (such as for death or personal injury caused by my negligence). Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
11. Questions
If anything here is unclear, or something happens during your hire that these terms don't cover, please just get in touch and we'll sort it out sensibly.
